DVD Review: Everything Must Go

Craig Nicholson

Respected funnyman Will Ferrell shows us another side of his acting abilities with a testing role - playing Nick Halsey.

There's nothing funny about Nick's life. When he returns home after being fired from his job, he finds all his possessions on the front lawn, his wife long gone and the house locks changed.

Nick's life has seemingly turned to dust in a heartbeat.

But the truth is, his inability to control his drinking has finally taking its toll.

Everybody has had enough.

Nick's initial reaction to his situation is to set up shop on his front lawn and drink beer like it is water.

When his money dries up he is forced to confront his situation and it takes a friendship with a local African-American boy to set him on the right path.

Kenny (Christopher Jordan Wallace) is wise beyond his years and his home truths get Nick thinking.

Nick decides that everything must go, all his possessions.

With Kenny's help, he organises a monumental garage sale so he can move on with his life.

As Nick reflects on his life and considers some of the items he is selling, it's a poignant tale.

For it seems that with each sold item, a greater weight lifts off his shoulders and the path to his future becomes so much clearer.

Ferrell certainly surprises with his effort here.

We see some serious acting ability as he plays a character who's trying to to turn his life into something better.
