Challenging weather conditions could hamper firefighting efforts at Lismore Forest near Whanganui where a large vegetation fire is still uncontained.

Fire and Emergency NZ incident controller Assistant Commander Renee Potae said on Tuesday morning that the fire was burning through slash piles, cutover pine forest and underneath standing pine trees on the forest floor in several locations, across difficult terrain.

“There will be multiple crews on the ground today with support from heavy machinery and five helicopters.

“Crews from the Department of Conservation and the New Zealand Defence Force will also support firefighting efforts today.“

The fire started on Sunday, taking hold of pine trees and vegetation across several gullies on SH4 and spreading into standing pines.

On Monday, Potae said about 100ha was affected by the fire, with an estimated perimeter of 4km.

Tuesday’s weather could make firefighting efforts more difficult.

“The wind has picked up significantly and some rain is forecast which could make the ground muddy and make access more difficult for ground crews.

“I would like to acknowledge all our firefighters, who are working tirelessly in steep and arduous conditions.

“I would also like to thank forestry owners, who are supporting us by operating heavy machinery to help cut containment lines.”

A temporary fire ban is in place for the Manawatū-Whanganui area because of weather conditions.

The ban includes open-air fires and fireworks, including paper lanterns, until December 19.

Fire and Emergency said no fires are allowed in the open and all fire permits are suspended.
