Wild weather has kept emergency services and maintenance crews busy as severe gusts caused havoc around the top of the South Island and the bottom of the North Island today.

Warnings for central and southern parts of New Zealand have since been lifted, though MetService warned that exposed places were still at risk of strong gusts.

Snow was also expected to affect higher roads in the South Island today.

A strong wind warning has expired for Southland, Fiordland and Stewart Island.

In the North Island, severe gale warnings are no longer in place for the Tararua District or Wairarapa.

Thousands of homes across Wellington and the South Island were left without power this morning, but crews have since reconnected most households.

In the South Island, Network Tasman still has just over 200 people recording unplanned outages. Outages on the West Coast have also been restored, as well as around 20 homes at Little River on Banks Peninsula.
