A snow warning has been issued for State Highway 5 Napier-Taupō Rd for Thursday with motorists urged to avoid travel on the road where possible.
The MetService road snow warning is in place from 4pm to 10pm on Thursday for the highway, which winds through the Kaweka Range bordering Hawke’s Bay.
“Snow is forecast to lower to about 600 metres late this afternoon. Expect two to three centimetres of snow to settle on the road,” the warning read.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has also issued a warning for drivers to be extra cautious on that road.
“Roading contractors will be on the road to ensure they’re able to respond quickly to any potential issues,” a Waka Kotahi statement read.
“Snow ploughs will also be used if the snow does settle on the road.
“Waka Kotahi is reminding all road users to avoid travel if you can, take extreme care on the road and drive to conditions.
“Please also expect short-notice closures should conditions worsen and keep an eye on the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner [website] for any changes.”
Rain is also expected on Thursday afternoon in centres such as Wairoa, Napier, Hastings and Waipukurau.
