A person has died after an incident involving a train at Te Awamutu railway station, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were notified at about 6.20pm on Sunday, saying on Sunday night they had attended a “serious incident” at the station.

“Sadly, one person died at the scene,” Senior Sergeant John McCarthy said in a late-night statement.

“This is a tragic incident, and we are providing support to whānau and those who acted immediately to try to help.”

The Serious Crash Unit had examined the scene and was still making enquiries, he said.

Anyone who saw what happened and had not yet spoken to police was urged to make contact – either by calling 105 or going to 105.police.govt.nz and clicking “update report”, using the reference number P067689720.

Police last night said there was no ongoing risk and asked members of the public to avoid the railway station.

WorkSafe said it had been notified and an inspector was making initial inquiries to understand what had happened.

KiwiRail said the rail line around Te Awamutu station was closed following the incident, but no KiwiRail services were currently affected.
