Six homes have been evacuated in the Central Otago town of Roxburgh as firefighters work to contain a scrub fire fanned by strong winds.

The fire, which was burning in trees, was reported about 2.45pm today.

Six firefighting crews will work through the night to extinguish the blaze, supported by an aerial crew.

Power has been disconnected to more than 220 Roxburgh properties as a safety precaution, according to Aurora Energy’s website.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said strong winds had fanned multiple vegetation fires across Otago today, causing them to escalate quickly.

“Strong winds and warm temperatures mean that fires spread quickly and are much more difficult for our firefighters to contain and bring under control,” District Commander Blair Kiely said in a release.

“The winds were so strong today that in most places we were not able to use aircraft.”

Kiely urged extra care with outdoor fires as Otago heads into what is expected to be a challenging wildfire season.

“Everyone can help by taking extra care with fire and getting prepared now, before conditions get any drier.”

People considering lighting an outdoor fire should check the weather forecast and visit www.checkitsalright.nz for guidance, he said.

Central Otago is under an orange strong wind warning until 9pm.
