A car has gone up in flames in North Canterbury after a firework was reportedly thrown through its window.
Emergency services were called to High St, Rangiora, after 9pm on Tuesday after someone reportedly threw a firework through a car window.
Fire and Emergency said the blaze threatened a nearby building but was contained before it could spread.
The fire is being treated as suspicious.
Police said they first received reports of a car fire on High St, Rangiora about 9.05pm on Tuesday.
They said inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances of the incident.
Fire and Emergency said the blaze was one of seven suspected fireworks-related fires this week.
The acting national manager for community readiness and recovery, Tom Ronaldson, said three vegetation fires involving trees and bushes appeared to have been ignited by fireworks in Papatoetoe, Kawerau and Fernside on Monday.
“On Tuesday, there were three vegetation fires in Rangitaiki, Ferrymead and Seddon, and a car fire in Rangiora, all likely caused by fireworks,” Ronaldson said.
“We haven’t seen as many fireworks-related fires as in previous years, but all of these fires are preventable. So it’s so important people who choose to light fireworks take responsibility and do it safely.”
Donaldson said while the forecast predicts possible showers across the country for Guy Fawkes celebrations, a low risk does not equate to no risk.
“The number of fireworks-related fires has been on the increase over the past two years.
“We would like to see that trend turn around this year.”
Donaldson advised people to check local fire conditions and restrictions at checkitsalright.nz before lighting them.
“Your fireworks are your own responsibility,” he said.
