A confrontation in South Wairarapa ended with a man allegedly firing at another person, hitting a vehicle in the process.

Detective Senior Sergeant Philip Skoglund said police charged a man after a firearms incident in Martinborough early this morning.

About 12.30am, police were called to a private address on Malcolm St after reports of a weapon being fired.

The shooting allegedly occurred after a confrontation between two groups.

Skoglund said two shots were reportedly fired, one in the direction of a person.

“No injuries were reported, but a vehicle was hit,” he said.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with discharging a firearm with intent to intimidate and is due to appear in Masterton District Court on November 7.

Police said they are concerned about increased illegal use of firearms in the Wairarapa, with two instances in the last week.
