Internet mogul and fugitive from United States justice Kim Dotcom has appeared in his first major media interview since suffering a serious stroke almost two years ago - the appearance revealing just how much the stroke has impacted his life.

Speaking to American commentator Tucker Carlson in an interview aired late Friday night in the US, the 52-year-old’s speech was at times slurred, slower and more pronounced.

Speech impairment is common for many stroke patients, after damage occurs to the areas of the brain that control language processing and muscle co-ordination.

Although Dotcom has shared snippets of his life in rehab - learning to stand and walk again, eye co-ordination activities and physical exercises - this is the first time the world has seen him up close since the life-changing event.

Dotcom was speaking to Carlson about the erosion of digital privacy, the role of AI in mass data collection and propaganda and the broader implications for free speech.

Surprise political endorsement

The interview also provided a surprise endorsement for the NZ Outdoors & Freedom Party.

Asked by Carlson if there are any free countries, or the freest country, “where people can say what they think with the most latitude”, Dotcom’s response was swift.

“I think Switzerland is very good, because they have direct democracy - not a representative democracy. So the people decide. It is people power.

“I bring that into New Zealand this election. So with the Freedom Party, we will have direct democracy available here.”

Dotcom’s appearance comes after the Court of Appeal dismissed his latest bid to stop his extradition to the US, which has been an ongoing legal fight.

He spoke briefly about that on Carlson’s show.

“Oh, they want to extradite me from New Zealand to the United States. Even after my stroke, they are still trying to do that.

“They will want to - I have no doubt. But I don’t know if they can, because I’m not the same person anymore after my stroke. So if they really want to go ahead, they are up for a big challenge.”

Late last year, Dotcom posted on X that the New Zealand Government had prior warning from his doctor about a stroke risk, but “that they didn’t care,” he wrote.

“They still want to extradite me,” he wrote at the time.
