A renowned West Auckland twin-sister DJ duo were booed during their set after technical issues disrupted the University of Canterbury’s Tea Party.

The Katayanagi Twins, Rain and China Katayanagi, said the crowd didn’t understand it “wasn’t our fault” and began throwing items at them.

In a video posted to social media, one of the sisters said they were supposed to play for an hour but only performed two songs in full before the music cut out.

They tried to switch the mixers because they were overheating, but it wasn’t working, and the music kept cutting out due to it.

“They didn’t understand that’s not our fault. They started throwing stuff at us,” one sister said.

“Some guy said it was the worst set that he’s ever seen.”

The twins described the experience as “rough” and “brutal”.

“They started chanting ‘DJ f*** off’.”

The student union organisers of the event took to social media and said the technical issues were “entirely on us and not a reflection on the Katayanagi Twins”.

It apologised to the sisters for not removing them from the stage sooner while working to resolve the issues.

“It is disappointing to have seen the booing and throwing of items from people in the crowd, and we don’t condone this behaviour towards artists,” the post read.

“We want our artists to feel safe and have a great on stage experience especially when issues are not within their control. We apologise to the Katayanagi Twins for not protecting them during their set.

“There will be follow up on crowd behaviour from the event.”

Katayanagi Twins said this is a PSA to be nicer to DJs.

“Because it’s not our fault. We want you guys to have a good time, we want to have a good time.

“We also feel bad we didn’t get to play ... we need a redemption gig.”

University of Canterbury and the Katayanagi Twins have been approached for comment.
