A fisherman has died after falling into the water at a Far North beach.

Police were called to Ninety Mile Beach at 1.20pm yesterday and, with the help of Surf Life Saving New Zealand and the Northland Emergency Services Trust helicopter, found the man in the water.

He was brought ashore and CPR was administered.

“Despite best efforts by emergency services, the man was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene,” police said in a statement.

Maunganui Bluff Trustees said the “tragedy” happened at Waka-te-Haua (the Maunganui Bluff).

A rāhui has been placed over the area for two weeks from Waipakaru Pou - the northern boundary - to Te Ārai Pou -the southern boundary.

No seafood, shellfish, fish or any other food resources should be gathered from the area until the rāhui is lifted on September 10.

“The Maunganui Bluff Trustees extend our condolences to the whānau and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.”

The man’s death will be referred to the coroner.
