A pedestrian has died after she was struck by a train at a rail crossing in Henderson this afternoon.
The woman died at the Mt Lebanon Lane rail crossing near the Sturges Rd train stationabout 2.55pm.
A cordon is expected to remain in place until this evening.
Police Acting Inspector Warwick Stainton asked any witnesses to come forward.
He said police were working to notify the next of kin.
A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said she went to the scene to make sure everyone was okay.
“All I was told was that it was a female and that she was deceased.
“A neighbour told me she saw the girl walking towards the crossing while the barriers were down, so I really don’t know how or why it happened,” the resident said.
“It’s really sad and heartbreaking.”
She said she understood multiple people were nearby and witnessed the death.

A nearby worker told the Herald they saw multiple police cars in the area.
A video from the scene showed about three police cars blocking the road’s entrance, an ambulance and a fire engine.
A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said it sent an ambulance and referred comments to the police.
Auckland Transport (AT) advised people to check live departure and digital screens at train stations before they board.

“Trains will run between Manukau and Henderson only, and will not stop at Sturges Rd, Ranui or Swanson stations.”
AT said rail replacement buses will run between Henderson and Swanson, stopping at Sturges Rd, Ranui and Swanson stations.
The buses are expected to depart Henderson from about 3.35pm and will accept train tickets.
