A large silage fire which spread to nearby pine trees has now been extinguished in the Ashburton district.

As of 3pm, Fire and Emergency New Zealand said “overhaul has been completed” on the 50 to 60sq m blaze on Acton Rd, Dorie.

Fire crews are now scaling down their operations.

Fire and Emergency received a 111 call at 11.49am today and initially sent one pumping appliance and two water tankers to the scene.

But on arrival, fire crews found a “silage stack on fire that has spread to the pine edge”.

Extra resources were called in to tackle the 50 to 60sq m blaze, with about three pumping appliances, three fire trucks, and six water tankers responding.

Police were notified of the fire at about 11.50am and a police unit was dispatched to the scene.

Hato Hone St John said it was notified of the fire but “not required”.
