Two people are dead and a survivor is in hospital after a boat capsized off Manawatū’s coast this morning.

Emergency services were called to a capsized boat near the Tangimoana River mouth about 8.35am.

Manawatū area commander Inspector Matenga Gray said: “Sadly, two people died, while another sustained injuries and has been taken to hospital”.

Coastguard’s National Operations Centresaid three people tipped into the water when a craft overturned on the Rangitīkei River bar at Tangimoana, an isolated coastal settlement about 15km southwest of Bulls.

The centre was alerted just after 8am. Coastguard Manawatū volunteers responded with their jetski Blue Rescue and vessel Kevin Morris II.

One person made it to shore, a Coastguard spokesperson said. A second person was found on the beach and the third was brought in by Coastguard volunteers.

Hato Hone St John said a survivor was taken to Palmerston North Hospital in a moderate condition.

Six Manawatū-Tararua search and rescue squad lifeguards responded with two inflatable rescue boats.

Police also responded to the “water incident” about 8.35am.
