Police blocked a central Hastings street after one person was seriously injured in a dog attack on Tuesday.

Emergency services and Hastings District Council’s animal control team were called to Russell St South, across from the city’s clocktower, after the attack at about 2.20pm.

Animal control officers could be seen loading a dog into a van as police officers carrying Tasers stood by and blocked traffic from entering the street.

A police spokeswoman said one person was seriously injured in the attack.

Hato Hone St John said one ambulance responded after being notified at 2.17pm.

Staff treated the patient at the scene and transported them to Hawke’s Bay Hospital in a serious condition.

A Hastings City Council spokeswoman said the dog, an American staffordshire/pitbull cross, had been impounded twice in May this year for roaming.

The dog has now been seized by Animal Control and an investigation is pending.
