Three buses with 10 people on board have crashed outside a shopping centre in East Auckland, leaving three people hospitalised.

Police said Chapel Rd was closed earlier today to northbound traffic outside the Botany Town Centre after the crash about 10.50am.

The section of Chapel Rd has since reopened.

Hato Hone St John said four patients were assessed at the scene, with three taken to Middlemore Hospital with moderate injuries.

Auckland Transport (AT) general manager of network management Duncan McGrory confirmed there was a collision involving three buses at a bus stop on Chapel Rd.

He said two buses were stationary and not in service, and 10 passengers were on board the operational service.

“Three people on the operational service, including the bus driver, sustained minor injuries, and our thoughts are with all those involved.

“Where we have contact details available for the passengers who were on board, we are reaching out to them to offer our support.”

McGrory said emergency services and bus operators would investigate the circumstances of the incident with the support of AT.

Detours are in place for bus routes 31, 35 and 739. Customers are advised to check the AT Mobile app for the most recent updates.
