An autopsy is set to take place after a body was found in a car fire in the Waitomo district yesterday.

Emergency services were alerted around 6am on Sunday to a car fire on Mokauiti Rd in Aria.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews were sent to extinguish the fire. Police were called after a body was found inside the vehicle.

Police said they were advised and cordons were in place yesterday on Mokauiti Rd, between Waitahi Rd and Oniao Rd.

Police worked at the scene and the road was reopened by 8.30pm.

“At this stage, the death is being treated as unexplained and inquiries are ongoing,” area investigations manager Detective Senior Sergeant Ian Foster said.

“Formal identification is underway and a post-mortem is expected to take place tomorrow.”
